A Village Project. Congratulations to Mickleton Community Archive Project!

Despite a very windy, cold and wet Saturday afternoon a large crowd of villagers turned up to watch the unveiling of a new mural for Mickleton. Mounted on the back wall of the old stone bus shelter, and designed with the help of school children and a local artist, the project lead, Barry Metcalfe unveiled the mural to parishioners for the first time. The mural depicts the main buildings within the village to celebrate its distinctive quality and was created as the final component of the ‘Mickleton Community Archive Project’.

This project, began in 2012, is about providing the opportunity for as wide range of people as possible to take part in and learn about the history of Mickleton. As this is a heritage project, the key element has been the creation of an archive of the history and heritage of the parish, in a website format which can be viewed and enjoyed by the community now and into the future. Alongside the mural and website, maps featuring village walks around the village have also been produced.

Many volunteers from the community were involved, in developing and shaping the project, some providing photographs and written material, helping to catalogue each item, as well as running fundraising and social events over the three years to ensure that the main project outputs were completed.

Although the website, maps and mural have now been created the project will not stop here. As more archive materials come to light these will continue to be added to the Mickleton Community Archive website to ensure that these memories are kept in perpetuity for the whole community.
