The Brain Family

A Family Search

Frederick Brain born 1855 (younger brother of Joseph) sitting in middle. Who are the others?

I have been doing some research into my family’s history and have traced my roots back to the Brain’s of Mickleton/Ebrington and Hidcote and would be very interested to hear from any current members of the ‘Brain’ family that had ancestors who lived there. I descended from Robert – [1772-1849] and who married a Sarah Yeates [1794]. The last of my grandfathers to be born in Mickleton was a Joseph [baptised 3/4/1853] He later moved to Birmingham in the mid 1870’s

  • My Name is Fiona Alice Brain. I am a descendant of Frederick Brain (1855-1939), the younger brother of Joseph Brain (1853-1931).

Frederick Brain was my 2nd Great Grandfather. He was born in Mickleton 18th June 1855. He was a Market Gardner in Mickleton and married Ann (Annie) Kinchen on the 15th April 1876. They had 8 children together.

By 1911 age 56, Frederick had established his own business (F Brain & Sons) and would supply Birmingham Market with vegetables.
He died in Mickleton on 8th February 1939 age 83 and is buried in St Lawrence Church Mickleton.

His son Frank, my great Grandfather, began a tenancy lease from Middle Hill Estate for the family business at Peters Farm Broadway, near Broadway Tower in 1923. Here they successfully esablished Brassica crops (despite the opinion these crops would not survive at the high allitude).

Frank married Agnes Newman in April 1920 and they had 3 chidren together; Frederick William Gordon, Alexander Douglas (my Grandfather) and Agnes Elizabeth Ann. Sadly Agnes died at the age of 32 from acute pnemonia when their daughter was only 7 months old.

Frank died 14th June 1958 age 65 after successfully working the land and providing the business with additional vegetables for the business in Mickleton. He is also buried at St Lawrence Church Mickleton.

Alexander (Doug) bought the farm (with a mortgage) in 1980 when Middle Hill Estate began to sell. By now, F Brain & Sons had ceased trading upon Frank’s death and the business AD Brain & Son was well established; expanding into seed pototoes and cereals. The business continues today with my Father Kenneth Anthony Brain and brother, Jason Andrew Brain.

  • I left the Village in 1962, but I have lovely memories of the Brain family who lived in Back Lane with two daughters, Maureen and Christine…not sure if the father was around at that time. Mrs Brain had a smallholding on the Campden Road, somewhere close to the railway bridge. She kept lots of chickens there, and sold the eggs.
Not sure if this is part of your research, but hope it helps.
My name is Irene Reay, nee Sherwin, my parents owned the village shop.
