44 Cedar Road, January 1959

At the time No. 44 was the last house on the south side of Cedar Road as can be seen from the fields beyond the house. The houses on Grandbrook Lane can be seen in the distance.

Claire Dinwoodie, age 4

My parents Charlie & Daphne Dinwoodie moved into the newly built Council house in 1955 when I was a baby. They were delighted to be allocated the house as they had been living with my Grandparents at Canada Lane before this.

There were a lot of families with young children living on Cedar Road at the time so there were always friends to play with and lots of birthday parties. It was a lovely place to live.

  • I remember the cows but I can’t seem to recall the field catching fire. Our play area, “the green” seems to be a bit of a car park now. The cutting is still there though. I remember walking through there, over Grandbrook Lane, across Grandbrook Orchard and between the greenhouses to my Grandparents house on Canada Lane. I remember doing this walk on my own from quite a young age.

  • The house I grew up in is just behind you Claire, number 27. We were the end house on that side of the road. I wonder if anyone remembers the cows that were kept in the field and the night the grass caught fire?
I agree with you in that it was a great place to grow up and such a shame that the green we used to play on has now gone!
