The Milking Pail

The Milking Pail Inn now a cottage

Originally known as the Milk Maid Inn it later became the Milking Pail. The first meeting of the Friendly Society in Mickleton met there on the 1st June 1787 where they planned the annual Whitsuntide day club which took place at until 1939. The large room above the beer cellar was probably the meeting room.

In 1877 Valerie Loveridge was fined 5s for being drunk at the inn!

Claire Waters shared her  mother Daphne Dinwoodie (ne Cowley) memories about their family links with the Milking Pail:

‘ Her Great Grandmother, Eliza George kept the Milking Pail in the latter part of the 19th Century with her daughter Rachel and son Tom George. Rachel George married John Cowley in 1896 and her Father ( Claire’s Grandfather) William John Cowley was born in 1896.

Sometime in the early 20th Century the Milking Pail was taken on by Stephen Cowley, brother of her Great Grandfather John Cowley. The Cowley family was a big family in the village at the time as can be seen from the group photo.’

Many of the photos here show Stephen Cowley and his family.

  • Hi Claire
Thank you so much for getting in touch with us and sharing your mother’s memories of the Cowley family connection to The Milking Pail. I have added one or two more photos that feature Stephen Cowley and now shared your mothers memories on the article. I hope you like the revised article.

  • My mother Daphne Dinwoodie (ne Cowley) told us about our family links with the Milking Pail. Her Great Grandmother, Eliza George kept the Milking Pail in the latter part of the 19th Century with her daughter Rachel and son Tom George. Rachel George married John Cowley in 1896 and her Father ( my Grandfather) William John Cowley was born in 1896. Sometime in the early 20th Century the Milking Pail was taken on by Stephen Cowley, brother of my Great Grandfather John Cowley. The Cowley family was a big family in the village at the time as can be seen from the group photo. It’s a shame I didn’t get to discuss the photo with my Mother as she may have been able to identify some of them.

  • Thank you for getting in contact Edward and providing us with more information on the Cowley family. Do you know what relation George Cowley was to Stephen Cowley in the photograph? Did your parents live in Mickleton? Any more information you have would be great.
