1st Mickleton Scout Camp West Wittering 1928

Each year, throughout the 1920s and 30s Mickleton Scouts went away to camp. Trips included: Selsey in West Sussex in 1927 and 1929, West Wittering in West Sussex in 1928, Staples in Pembrokeshire in 1930, Caerfai Bay, St Davids in Pembrokeshire 1932, Lee Bay in North Devon 1936. The Scoutmaster was Mr E. Chadband, known to all as Chaddy.  Miss Dorothy Dixon and Miss Muriel Crowdy were Assistant Scoutmasters.

The scouts travelled in cars and lorries (filled with their kit) to the campsites where they erected bell tents. Bill ( William) Pearce often did the driving; Miss Dixon would sit in the passenger seat.

They gathered wood for the campfire and made and set up temporary cooking quarters where they cooked the meals, then served in billy cans. There were regular kit inspections by Muriel Crowdy. The Scouts laid out all their kit on the ground, military style, for review. Each day there were prayers. Bill was also a great organiser and was responsible for checking off the daily jobs.
