Memories of Mickleton Manor 1920s

These photos were published in an article by Paul Wootton titled’ Memories of the Manor’ in Cotswold Life in 1983. Paul went to live there as a young boy with his family after The Great War.

This photo shows Nurse Cock and the ‘happy event’ which heralded her arrival-the birth of Paul’s younger brother.The article recalls Paul’s childhood in the Manor.

” Short of stature, with her hair parted down the middle and taken back in a bun, Nurse Cock ruled the domestic roost in no uncertain terms. This coiffure of hers was in fact visible only in the early morning and evening, for even when she was indoors she was reluctant to remove the broad brimmed Panama hat that she habitually wore; certainly the flapping of it’s wide brim lent weight to the instructions she handed out to the attendant housemaid. 

Nurse Cock joined the strength primarily to look after the latest arrival, but there were times-after the afore mentioned elder brother had gone off to boarding school-when I came under her care ( Paul). When the state of the weather precluded my being turned loose out-of-doors by myself, I had to suffer the indignity of being taken in tow behind the pram when the bay was wheeled out for an airing. 

Sometimes, though, a tour of the village was the order of the day, with the chance for Nurse to exchange gossip with two old cronies of hers, Miss Bowell and Miss Bubb.”
