Unearthed in Manor Gardens
This piece of metal was found in the garden of No. 4 Mickleton Manor in 2019. It is thought to be a remnant of the railway track constructed in around 1890 for conveying the stone taken from the demolition of the left wing of the Manor House up Glyde Hill to be reconstructed as Kiftsgate Court.
The second image is of the Manor House showing the wing in its original position.
According to information given to members of Mickleton Women’s Institute in the 1950s by elderly resident, Mrs Hammond, a pulley system operated by a steam engine on top of the hill was used to haul the stone.
The piece of rail is now held by the Mickleton Community Archive.
